Appomattox Day

Appomattox Day is an annual American holiday commemorating the Appomattox Company during the American Civil War. It served as the basis for the end of the conflict and the signing of a peace agreement. It is celebrated on April 9.

History

The story of Appomattox Day involves Confederate troops under Robert E. Lee and Union troops under Ulysses Grant. In early April 1865, Lee’s troops attempted to fortify the town of Appomattox. With his men he fortified the lines, but the battle was doomed to failure.

Allied forces under Grant’s command surrounded Appomattox. Attempts to counterattack and attack only resulted in loss of life. Grant tried to negotiate the surrender of his troops with Lee, but he still believed in a possible victory. However, the realization that all avenues of retreat had been cut off and that support could not be expected changed Lee’s mind. It was on April 9 that the surrender agreement was signed at McLean’s house.
