Auctioneers Day

Auctioneers Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to auctioneers. Every year thousands of auctions take place in the U.S., where people buy up specific items (cars, art, etc.) or entire warehouses and containers, hoping to find something valuable there. It is celebrated each year on the third Saturday in April.

History

The establishment of Auctioneers Day is an initiative of the National Association of Auctioneers (N.A.A.). It began to be celebrated in 1996. Auctions themselves have been around for thousands of years. There is historical information that as far back as 500 BC there were auctions. At that time, livestock, works of art, and even women were offered for sale (so-called marriage auctions).

In today’s world, bidding has become a real business for many. Auctions of warehouses and containers that were never picked up are popularized. After being stored in ports for a certain period of time, they are automatically auctioned off. You can easily get rich or lose all your money at an auction. The bids on some items are usually in the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars, although there are rare exceptions.

Interesting facts

  • According to statistics, more than $230 billion worth of goods are sold at auction each year in the U.S.
  • Experienced bidders should have a good knowledge of the secondary market in order to assess the approximate value of the items for sale as objectively as possible.
  • Since 1995, eBay has been operating an online auction site. The most expensive sale was a Gulfstream V jet, which left the auction for $40 million.
