Ballpoint Pen Day

Ballpoint Pen Day is celebrated on June 10th in honor of the Bíró brothers, László and György, who are credited with the invention of the ballpoint pen. On this day, in 1943, the Bíró brothers filed an application for the patent of the ballpoint pen with the European Patent Office. These early pens became the first commercial models of the ballpoint pen. Later on, the patent rights were purchased by British Parliament and the pens were used by the Royal Air Force during World War II. The ballpoint pen serves two major functions that makes them so important: the ball acts as a cap to close in the ink and keep it from drying, and the ball lets the user control the rate at which the ink comes out of the pen. These two innovations came in very handy for the Royal Air Force because the ballpoint pens could be used without a problem at high altitudes with reduced pressure. The previously used fountain pens flooded.

Celebrate this weird holiday by taking a break from the keyboard on your computer or phone, and write a letter to someone you love. Start a pen collection and see how big you can grow it! Instead of throwing away an old pen, buy a refill for it. Draw a picture, or practice your signature with a ballpoint pen. Walk up to someone that you see today, and wish them a «Happy Ballpoint Pen Day!». Anyway you celebrate Ballpoint Pen Day, we hope you have a happy weird holiday!
