Biographer’s Day

Biographers Day is an American holiday dedicated to biography. In its essence, it is a literary work that fully depicts the life of a particular person. It is celebrated annually on May 16.

History

The history of Biographers Day is not known. However, the creation of this day is based on an event that took place in the middle of the 18th century. On that day S. Johnson (who was a biographer) met with his colleague D. Boswell in London. Their meeting became the basis for the production of one of England’s finest biographies. The object of the work was Johnson himself.

It is worth noting that biographies have been written since the days of ancient Rome. At that time they were written about the rulers and famous political figures in order to leave a memory about them for future generations. Biographies are in great demand today because they allow you to get detailed information about the person you are interested in (usually they are persons of global or local popularity).

Interesting facts

  • Autobiography is a formal genre of literature. There are also autobiographical novels/stories, where real events are embellished a bit for more brevity.
  • In the 2nd century A.D., in ancient Greece, the longest collection of biographies of famous personalities of the time was compiled by Plutarch.

How to celebrate

The holiday encourages you to learn more about famous personalities, and to try to create a personal autobiography about a section of your life that you’ve lived.

Tell about the holiday on social networks. Ask users what famous people’s biographies they’ve read. Have they tried creating their own biography?
