International Louie Louie Day

International Louie Louie Day is an international holiday dedicated to the singer Richard Berry and his very famous song. It has become a literal reflection of that era. It’s hard to find someone who was in their conscious age in the late 1950s and hasn’t heard it! It is celebrated annually on April 11.

History

Р. Berry completed “Louie Louie” in 1955. Three years later it was released with the help of the American musical group The Pharaohs. Broadcasts of the song began in San Francisco and were a resounding success. The track’s popularity grew and covered all of America. Many garage bands recorded cover versions in large quantities, hoping to grab themselves a slice of success and attract new listeners.

In 1953 The Kingsmen made their own recording of this song. Most people associate it with them, often forgetting that all the success was made possible only thanks to its creator, Richard Berry.

Most radio stations banned the track, despite its resounding success, because the band leader Eli sang very indecipherable and many found obscenities in the song. The FBI even got involved and scrutinized the lyrics. Nevertheless, The Kingsmen’s track is firmly established in the history of music and is already a classic of that era.
