History

The creation of McDonald’s Day commemorates the beginning of the first establishment in San Bernardino, California, on May 15, 1940. Its founders were brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald. Initially they were in the barbecue business, and the business grew steadily. However, they later found out that hamburgers were in great demand among residents. They converted their building into a self-service outlet in 3 months. Simple dishes such as burgers, chips, pie, drinks and more appeared on the menu.

In 1954, the brothers met Ray Kroc, a milkshake maker. They were ordering products from him. Kroc was excited about their business and saw potential there, which led him to the idea of buying the franchise rights. It was on April 15, 1955, that his fast food establishments opened in Illinois. Further relations with the brothers were difficult as they felt the competition and their views on doing business differed. Eventually in 1961, Kroc bought the company outright. The brothers ran their first and only establishment until bankruptcy, and Ray became the owner of a huge and successful business.
