National 401(k) Day

National 401(k) Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday after Labor Day. What should be done on this day? First, check your savings and make sure your retirement years will be worry-free. It turns out that 79% of Americans work in organizations and companies that have a 401(k) plan, but only 41% of citizens use this opportunity.

History

National 401(k) Day was first celebrated in 1996 at the initiative of the American Council for Profit Sharing. The Friday after Labor Day is a symbolic choice. Monday symbolizes the beginning of a career, and Friday – its completion. The holiday affects the interests of both employers and employees. It motivates the former to provide access to the 401(k) plan, and the latter to use its features.

How to use the 401(k) plan

  • Start making contributions as early as possible, no matter if you are only 20 years old.
  • Remember that the employer can contribute up to 50% of each contribution to your account. For example, if the monthly contribution is 6%, the employer will contribute 3%.
  • You have the right to choose exactly those investments that are most preferable to you.
  • Do not spend the money in advance; this leads to fines and additional taxes.
  • Check your savings regularly and keep track of account changes.

How to take part

First, learn how you can save for retirement by accessing a 401(k) plan. If this option is not available, consult with a lawyer – find out what can be done. Attend a learning event about retirement savings. Calculate your savings yourself using a special calculator.
