National Carousel Day

National Carousel Day is celebrated every year on July 25th. It was founded by the National Carousel Association. This date marks a significant event in 1871 – the first patent for a carousel design, by William Schneider. However, this attraction appeared much earlier – there evidence for something similar in the Byzantine Empire, approximately 500 AD.

The History

The Byzantine Empire attraction looked quite interesting – people sat in baskets hanging from special poles. There are several versions about the origin of the word ‘carousel’. According to one, it is associated with the Italian word ‘garosello’; with the other, the Spanish word ‘carosello’. Both mean ‘small battle’. The first attraction we would recognize – wooden horses moving in a circle – appeared in the 17th century.

It is believed Gustav Dentzel, an emigrant from Germany, was the first to come up with the idea of ​​​​using animals on a carousel. But he did not get a patent for his invention. That honor went to William Schneider from Davenport, Ohio.
