History

The wife of a Georgia physician named E.B. Almond was responsible for creating National Doctors Day. She decided that doctors should be rewarded for their hard work, and the establishment of a professional holiday would be the best reward for all professionals. Thus, the first celebration of the day took place in 1933.

The history of medicine dates back to ancient times. At that time, primitive methods of treatment were used, herbal decoctions were popular (which, by the way, were often effective).

The date of the celebration commemorates the first successful surgery using anesthesia. In 1942, physician K.W. Long performed cyst removal using ether as anesthesia.

• The most famous ancient physicians are considered to be the philosophers Alcmaeon and Empedocles (about 5th century B.C.).
• Hippocrates is called the father of medicine. He was the first to compile and introduce the “Physician’s Code,” which all medical professionals were expected to adhere to. Today it is known as the “Hippocratic Oath.
