National Dolphin Day

The day of April 14 is dedicated to smart mammals on Earth; we celebrate National Dolphin Day and continue to admire the intelligence and extraordinary abilities of living creatures.

The History

The evolution of dolphins goes back millions of years. Four-legged creatures moved back into the water, adapting to live in that environment. People sometimes hunt dolphins. Their number is declining, threating them with extinction. This holiday attracts attention to an essential issue arising within the framework of the environmental agenda. In 2009, staff members of National Geographic presented a documentary investigating cases of mass extermination of dolphins off the coast of Japan. Author’s name is Louie Psihoyos. His film provoked worldwide interest in this conservation.

Fun Facts

Dolphins have unique hearing, distinguishing sound vibrations at frequencies inaccessible to humans.

  1. There are 40 varieties of dolphins. The most common and well-known is the bottlenose dolphin.
  2. Dolphins prefer shallow water. At great depths, they use a special method of communication — echolocation helps them find relatives, warn about dangers, and navigate in the water.
  3. Dolphins migrate in schools of up to 1000 individuals. If someone is sick or injured, they help them, take care of them, getting them food and protecting them.
  4. Dolphins are characters in fairy tales, children’s books, cartoons, and wildlife films. These animals are happy to participate in full-scale filming and are not afraid of people.
  5. Dolphins have developed family ties. The young do not separate from their mother for eight years.
  6. Dolphins never sleep. When they rest, one half of their brain falls asleep, while the other remains awake.

On this holiday, people make donations to charities involved in the protection of rare fauna. Everyone can help, any amount is important. People attract public attention by creating thematic blog posts: rising ocean temperature affects marine life, including dolphins.
