Silver Star Service Banner Day is an annual American holiday created to honor fallen U.S. Army soldiers in military conflicts and to recognize soldiers who have received this award for valor on the battlefield. It is celebrated on May 1.
History
The history of the holiday begins in 2004. It was proposed by the SSFOA, an organization that unites families of service members who have been awarded the medal. Over the years, however, it had unofficial status. That all changed in 2010, when the holiday was officially adopted by the U.S. government.
Soldiers were awarded the “Star of Honor” for their courage as early as the beginning of the 19th century. Later the award was called the “Silver Star”. It was intended for soldiers who had shown valor in battle. For example, they sacrificed their life or health to save their fellow soldiers, achieve their goal, etc.
To celebrate this day, the creators of the holiday suggest that people hang a banner or flag with the image of the “Silver Star” in their windows and thus commemorate all fallen soldiers, as well as pay tribute to those soldiers who were decorated with this award.
