The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a great Christian holiday. Included in the annual church cycle, it consists of 12 significant dates and is celebrated on September 14th. To learn more about this day, you need to turn to the Bible.

History

The appearance of The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is associated with a biblical legend. After the death of Jesus Christ, opponents of his faith decided to erase all traces of his life by destroying (as many people thought) the Cross used for his execution.

The mother of the ruler Constantine, who actively supported the religion of Jesus and erected churches, believed the relic was not lost. For her search, she decided to go to Jerusalem. In the holy city, a Jewish elder said that the Cross was buried under the temple of Venus.

After the demolition of the temple, three Crosses were indeed found under it, which Jesus and two criminals were executed. To find the true relic, it was decided to bring a dead man and a sick woman there. Crosses were applied to them in turn. Suddenly, a miracle occurred: the dead man came to life and the sick woman was healed. The lost relic was found. The Church of St. Helena was built especially for her on the former site of the temple. It was consecrated on September 13, 335 AD, and the next day, divine services were held in honor of finding the relic.

In 614, the relic disappeared again after a Persian attack. After 14 years, Emperor Heraclius was able to return it by signing a peace agreement with his enemies, and brought it with him to the capital of Byzantium. It was kept in the Church of the Holy Wisdom, and the faithful again found solace in it. Since then, The Exaltation of the Holy Cross has been celebrated annually around the world.

How to take part

  • During the celebration of The Exaltation of the Holy Cross, observe a strict fast. Meat and dairy products are not allowed.
  • Sprinkle the house with holy water while saying prayers.
  • Go to church for worship.
  • Take a rest and do not start new activities. This is a bad omen.
