World Leprosy Day

World Leprosy Day is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of the second winter month. It is dedicated to the fight against leprosy, a disease that in many countries of the world is considered extinct. In fact, it continues to spread and has destructive properties that can take a person’s life.

History

Hansen’s disease affects the nervous system, spreading to the face, arms, and legs. An infected person often does not even feel pain, which can lead to serious injury or even loss of limbs. Some patients also experience weakness and a sharp decrease in vision.

Leprosy got its second name in honor of the Norwegian doctor Gerhard Hansen. He gained fame when he first identified the bacteria that cause the disease. In the middle of the last century, a decision was made to create a World Leprosy Day. In India, it is celebrated on January 30, the day of the death of Mahatma Gandhi.

Despite the awareness of people in developed countries, in some cases, sick people become victims of discrimination. They are denied assistance and do not show an iota of compassion.

Interesting facts

  1. According to official figures, there are between 2 and 3 million people worldwide with a disability caused by leprosy.
  2. In 2018, the incidence peaked. According to inaccurate reports, cases have appeared in more than a hundred countries around the world. They also included Brazil, India and Indonesia.
  3. There are too many myths that do not allow people to adequately perceive the news of the disease. Some even believe that the affected limbs simply fall off. The idea of how the disease is transmitted is also erroneous. You can stand next to the infected person and shake his hand. It is to combat wrong opinions that the World Day of Struggle was created.

How to celebrate

This day is able to call for prudence and humanity. Often, public parades are organized in large cities. You can go alone to treatment centers and try to support those suffering from Hansen’s disease. There are also charities. Even the smallest help can make a real breakthrough in the world and save the life of someone who desperately needs it.
